The primary purpose of this trial was to establish whether a standardized, inexpensive, and well-tolerated antimicrobial agent, a second-generation cephalosporin, is safe and effective in the treatment of infections associated with staphylococcal or Klebsiella pneumoniae serotypes in adults. Methods We used a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial design to Fluconazole 5mg $68.13 - $0.38 Per pill evaluate the efficacy of erythromycin (200 mg twice daily, N=200) versus placebo (placebo tablet plus an oral rehydration solution, N=100) compared to amoxicillin-clavulanate (400 mg twice daily, N=100) administered at a 2-week interval in subjects treated for staphylococcal infection associated with or Klebsiella pneumoniae serotypes. Patients received treatment if they had a positive Gram stain for Staphylococcus aureus serotypes S1a, S1b, S1c, or S2a. The trial was conducted at a teaching hospital. Exclusion criteria included: a history of allergic or severe asthma, any other immuno-hematopoietic conditions, medication with systemic and/or immunomodulatory effects, immunosuppressive medications within 8 hours of randomization, known or suspected gastrointestinal bleeding any other conditions that might affect patient adherence to the regimen, history of or current alcohol illicit drug use, any medical condition that might affect patient compliance with treatment, and current or past pregnancy.
